Man for trial on charge of money laundering

Wednesday, 28 July 2010

A man is to stand trial accused of being involved in attempts to launder money stolen during cash-in-transit robberies, a judge has ruled.

A female co-accused was also returned to Belfast Crown Court on charges connected to travellers cheques seized from a travel agents.

Francis McColgan (36) and Ciara Torney (22) appeared together for a preliminary inquiry hearing before magistrates in the city.

McColgan, whose address was given as Maghaberry Prison, is alleged to have received £3,860 in stained or washed bank notes in November 2008, and another £1,480 in May 2009.

The judge granted a prosecution application to have both suspects returned for Crown Court trial on a date to be fixed.

McColgan was remanded back into custody while Torney was released on continuing bail.

Late night ban for Belfast teen

A teenager charged with rioting in south Belfast on July 12 has been banned from being out late at night.

A curfew was imposed on Daniel McGeown (18) as part of conditions under which he was released on bail.

McGeown, of Hatfield Street in the city, is accused of riotous behaviour and throwing a petrol bomb at police.

The charges relate to street disorder in the Ormeau Road area on July 12.

McGeown, the latest in a number of suspects to appear before Belfast Magistrates Court in connection with trouble across the city, spoke only to confirm he understood the allegations against him.

The judge imposed a curfew from 8pm to 7am. He was also banned from drinking alcohol and told to report to police twice a week.

McGeown was remanded to appear again in court next month.
