A Monongalia County business owner has been sentenced to prison after defrauding the U.S. Department of Agriculture of grant money, federal prosecutors said.
Timothy Chad Henson, 35, of Morgantown has been sentenced to 18 months in prison to be followed by three years of supervised release time for money laundering, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of West Virginia.
The news release said Henson, the owner of internet service provider Clearfiber Inc., applied for grants that would expand his business in Monongalia and Marion counties. Federal prosecutors said the USDA awarded the company $1.96 million to bring broadband to rural areas.
Prosecutors said Henson used false invoices to receive more than $340,000, most of which was transferred to a personal bank account.
