The Anti-Corruption Commission, or ACC, has prosecuted former lawmaker and ex-mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh.

His wife, Afrin Taposh, has also been named in the case.

The case was filed on Sunday, Mohammad Akhtar Hossain, the ACC's director general (prevention) confirmed.

According to the case details, Taposh is accused of illegally accumulating and possessing assets worth Tk 731.9 million, which is inconsistent with his declared sources of income.

Evidence was also found of abnormal transactions in his 27 bank accounts, amounting to Tk 5.39 billion and $517,527.

His wife Afrin has been accused of acquiring illegal assets worth Tk 64 million and conducting suspicious transactions in nine bank accounts, with a total of Tk 708.9 million and $395,963.

The case alleges that both Taposh and Afrin have violated various provisions of the Anti-Money Laundering Act and the Prevention of Corruption Act, including concealing and transferring ill-gotten wealth.

Taposh is the nephew of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.

Since the fall of the Awami League government on Aug 5, Taposh has not been publicly seen, and it is speculated that he had left the country earlier.

Taposh is also named in several cases related to the violence and fatalities during the student protests.
