The 2015 Asia/Pacific Group on Money Laundering (APG) from 16 to 20 November 2015 organized a workshop on Typologies and capacity building in Kathmandu, Nepal. A regularly occurring event, typologies workshops offer members an opportunity to get updated on the latest trends in the area of anti-money laundering and the combating of the financing of terrorism (AML/CFT).

Hosted by the Government of Nepal, the workshop involved some 230 delegates from 38 jurisdictions, 10 international organizations, as well as 39 representatives from the private sector. Co-chaired by APG Typologies working group Member States Fiji and Mongolia, the 2015 workshop plenary included a keynote address from the United Nations Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate (CTED) headlined “New and emerging risks in terrorism financing: a global overview.”

One of the key themes highlighted by CTED was Security Council resolution 2178 (2014) on foreign terrorist fighters, and how this pertains to AML/CFT matters. Another trend mentioned was the use of the Internet and social media by terrorists as a means to coordinate fundraising and to manage funds, as well as renewed abuse of charities by terrorists diverting funding from supposedly humanitarian purposes.
