Changpeng Zhao, the founder of Binance, has entered a low-security federal prison in Lompoc, California.

This move comes after Zhao pled guilty to assisting money laundering on the site, which resulted in his April punishment. Zhao, also known as CZ in the cryptocurrency industry, began his four-month prison sentence after a judicial struggle in which federal prosecutors sought a considerably harsher punishment.

Initially, prosecutors sought a three-year sentence, while the defense team from Latham & Watkins argued for five months probation. The sentencing guidelines recommended a period of 12 to 18 months. In the end, U.S. District Judge Richard Jones imposed a considerably reduced sentence of four months.

Before receiving his sentence, Zhao stood in court to express his regret and accept full responsibility for the lapse. “I’m sorry,” Zhao said, according to Reuters. He said,

“The first step in accepting responsibility is openly recognizing your faults. I should have created an effective anti-money laundering program… I now see the gravity of this error.”
