SALT LAKE CITY -- A U.S. grand jury indicted a former Layton city director of economic development of taking federal funds for his own salary.
Seth J. Butterfield was indicted Wednesdsay in U.S. District Court on two counts of wire fraud, two counts of theft from a program receiving federal program funds and one count of money laundering.
"We brought Seth (Butterfield) on two years after (Layton) became CDBG eligible," said former Mayor Jerry Stevenson.
Stevenson said he was shocked to hear about the charges because Butterfield "came to us with excellent credentials. He had worked with Ogden City for a time."
If convicted, Butterfield could be sentenced to serve up to 20 years in a federal prison on the money laundering charges, up to 10 years on each of the wire fraud charges and theft charges.
Butterfield is scheduled to appear on Dec. 29 before U.S. Magistrate David Nuffer.
