MANSFIELD — Former Madison athletics director Jim Van Tilburg pleaded guilty this afternoon to theft in office and money laundering.
During a six-year period from January 2005 to February 2011, Van Tilburg misappropriated almost $53,000 from the school. He has made restitution.
A Madison alumnus, Van Tilburg served as athletics director for 21 years. He resigned in January 2011, saying he was stepping down because of unspecified personal reasons.
By pleading to a bill of information, Van Tilburg bypassed the grand jury process. He could receive up to four-and-a-half years in prison at his March 26 sentencing before Richland County Common Pleas Judge James DeWeese. Until then, he is out on bond.
