Sat, May 2, 2015
COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - A Lexington man has entered a guilty plea in federal court to a charge of conspiracy to commit money laundering.
Joseph Patrick Gelli, 23, was accused of using the internet money system of Bitcoin to buy illegal drugs online. Prosecutors say Gelli purchased the drugs, including marijuana and psychotropic mushrooms, on an illegal internet site. The drugs were sent to his home, which he would sell to local users. He used Bitcoin to purchase the drugs.
A search of Gelli's home in Lexington uncovered $38,000 in cash and "a variety of illicit drugs," according to a news release.
Gelli faces a maximum of 20 years in prison when he is sentenced. A date has not been set for sentencing.
IRS investigators say Bitcoin is a virtual currency that can be used in a wide variety of crimes involving tax fraud, money laundering, and other financial crimes.
