Federal agencies looking into possible money laundering at Capital One
Wed, Feb 25, 2015
The U.S. Justice and Treasury departments are investigating possible money laundering at Capital One Financial, the McLean-based banking giant said in a regulatory filing on Tuesday.
Capital One said it received requests for information related to its anti-money- laundering protocols and check-casher clients in early 2015. The requests came from the Justice department and the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network of the Treasury Department.
The Justice department is also looking into the company’s subprime auto finance business.
Six months ago, Capital One disclosed that the New York District Attorney’s Office had made similar requests for subpoenas and testimony related to the company’s commercial banking business. The financial company first reported those requests for information in an Aug. 5 filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
Capital One said it is cooperating with all investigations.
The probe comes at a time when U.S. agencies are looking into questionable banking practices. JPMorgan Chase also disclosed Tuesday that the Justice Department was looking into possible discrimination in its auto lending practices.
As one of the country’s largest credit card lenders, Capital One has long relied on credit card fees and interest payments for a significant portion of its revenue. Last year it reported revenue of $4.43 billion.
Neither Capital One nor the federal agencies responded to e-mails and phone calls seeking comment.
