Benoni man uses cats to smuggle heroin
Sat, Nov 29, 2014
A Benoni man is accused of using cats to smuggle R13 million worth of heroin into the United Kingdom (UK), reported the Star newspaper reported on Friday.
According to the report, Scott Parker allegedly hid the drugs at the bottom of cat crates on their way to London’s Heathrow Airport while the felines were still inside them.
The heroin was discovered after workers at Heathrow Animal Reception Centre found the crates were unusually heavy after the cats had been taken out of them. On closer inspection, they discovered a false bottom in the crates and found 15kg of heroin hidden inside.
Britain’s National Crime Agency (NCA) was called in and arrested Parker when he came to collect the animals.
He has since been charged with importing class A drugs to the UK and has appeared in a London court.
He was remanded in custody until his next appearance next Thursday.
“This was an unusual concealment and if sold in the UK, the heroin would have had a value in excess of £750 000 (R13 million),” said the NCA Border Policing Command’s Paul Bolton.
“Those who engage in drug smuggling should be in no doubt that they will be targeted and brought to justice.”
An NCA spokesperson said the cats had been returned to their owners and were safe.
