Bong camp blasts AMLC report, denies money laundering
Tue, Oct 14, 2014
MANILA -- The lawyer of Senator Bong Revilla said the report of the Anti-Money Laundering Council (AMLC) on the allegedly unexplained wealth of the senator is not the ''slamdunk'' evidence that the prosecution says it is.
Speaking to ABS-CBN, Atty. Joel Bodegon said the AMLC report is inconclusive and does not prove allegations that the senator received kickbacks from the pork barrel scam.
The AMLC earlier said the bank deposits and investments made by Revilla, his wife Cavite Representative Lani Mercado, and their children amounted to P87,626,587.63 from April 6, 2006 to April 28, 2010.
The AMLC noted this was the same period that pork barrel scam whistleblower Benhur Luy indicated in his ledger that Revilla received commissions or rebates from his transactions with Napoles involving his Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) or pork barrel.
According to the AMLC, Revilla and his family made deposits and placed investments within 30 days from the dates stated by Luy in his ledger.
It noted that the interval between the receipt and initial deposit of cash is an integral indication of a money laundering scheme since the money, which is in cash, is still close to its alleged illegal origins.
However, Bodegon said there were several duplicates of bank accounts in the report to make it appear that the senator maintains more than 80 active bank accounts.
He also said the P87 million worth of banks deposits do not necessarily tally from the entries in Luy's ledger.
He added the supposed discrepancies in Revilla's SALN are also not indicative of any criminal activity as the wrong entries in the SALN could be corrected the following year.
The lawyer also pointed out unexplained wealth does not immediately mean that it is ill-gotten. He said it was only considered unexplained because they did not let his client explain where his money came from. Bodegon noted that the Revilla family is rich and has various sources of income.
Bodegon said they are ready to point out these inconsistencies when they cross-examine the AMLC representative on Thursday.
"Kung matapos kami baka hindi lang bail ang hihilingin namin, baka pati dismissal na rin ng case," he said.
