UT Arlington professor on paid suspension pending money laundering allegation
Sat, May 24, 2014
The University of Texas at Arlington suspended an associate professor with pay Friday after he was accused of being involved in a money laundering operation.
Eronini Megwa, 59, who taught in the communications department since 2008, was arrested along with his 50-year-old wife Susan Jenevive Megwa, following a two-year investigation of Megs Pharmacy in Denton. Megwa‘s wife owns the pharmacy.
He is accused of laundering over $200,000, said Denton police spokesman Ryan Grelle.
“As of this afternoon, Dr. Megwa has been suspended from his position at UT Arlington with pay, pending the outcome of a university investigation into the criminal allegations he is facing,” said Kristin Sullivan, a university spokeswoman.
“Dr. Megwa is not scheduled to teach this summer, but had been scheduled to teach during the fall 2014,” she said.
Denton police were tipped of to wrongdoings at the pharmacy two years ago when its name came up among drug arrests, Grelle said.
Investigators said the pharmacy was a drug hub for people outside of the Metroplex, and that Susan Jenevive Megwa was writing faulty prescriptions, including ones to herself, according to a Denton Record Chronicle report.
The report also states $223,000 was transferred to Nigeria from Meg’s Discount Pharmacy between Nov. 2011 and Dec. 2012.
Susan Jenevive Megwa was arrested on three counts of diversion of controlled substances and one count of laundering over $200,000.
Eronini Megwa was on the payroll and received $875 every two weeks, Grelle said.
The associate professor taught classes in mass communication, public relations, journalism, and intercultural and international communication, according to a university profile.
Police said he and his wife have already bonded out of jail, but were unable to say what day.
“It’s still an ongoing investigation,” Grelle said.
Four other people were arrested on Tuesday on narcotics charges.
