Jury can't decide in money laundering case

A Rotorua District Court jury trying two men on money laundering charges has been unable to reach verdicts.

After deliberating for more than four hours on Wednesday the forewoman told Judge Chris McGuire there was no likelihood of verdicts being reached either unanimously by a majority of nine to one.

The jury had been reduced to 10 members with two being discharged during the trial.

Judge McGuire discharged the jury and remanded Valentine Nicholas of Maketu and a Rotorua man, whose name is suppressed, on bail.

The matter will come before the court again at a callover on June 25.

When the trial began on May 12 Nicholas, 52, pleaded not guilty to laundering almost a million dollars knowing it came from selling cannabis.

The unidentified man, 51, denied laundering the money and was reckless where it came from cannabis sales.

The jury heard evidence that when the money was paid into the Rotorua man's account in 2006 it smelled of cannabis.

It was alleged the Rotorua man used the money to buy a forestry block near Opotiki.

He denied that saying it came for selling his "toys" including four-wheel drives and a Harley Davidson.

Nicholas did not give or call evidence.
