2 attempts to smuggle drugs foiled in Dubai and Sharjah

Abu Dhabi: Anti-narcotics authorities have seized 83,800 Tramadol pills in two separate operations during the first quarter of this year in Dubai and Sharjah.

Federal Anti-Narcotics Directorate at the Ministry of Interior conducted the operations in coordination with the anti-drug units in Dubai and Sharjah, Colonel Saeed Al Suwaidi, Director-General at the directorate, said in a press release on Saturday.

He said the directorate conducted the first operation after receiving reliable information that two people were receiving narcotic tablets, which were kept in an area in the emirate of Ras Al Khaimah. The tablets were to be smuggled to Dubai for sales across the UAE.

Colonel Al Suwaidi said a well-planned operation led to their arrest in Dubai after detaining the suspect with 23,800 Tramadol pills. The investigations in the case led to a third accomplice who was planning to receive part of the drugs.

Another team from the Federal Anti-Narcotics Directorate monitored the movements of another drug smuggling gang. On February 12, officials foiled attempts to smuggle 60,000 Tramadol pills in an Iranian boat coming from the Port of Shah Bahar to Sharjah Creek, Col Al Suwaidi said.

He said that the high level of security awareness and competency of the anti-narcotics officers enabled them to nab the captain, who admitted later that he had attempted to smuggle the drug to sell it in the UAE.
