MUMBAI: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) found itself struggling again in the city sessions court on Thursday to convince the judge that stud farm owner Hasan Ali Khan could be booked for money laundering.
ED officials have requested the court to grant them Khan's custody saying that they had to submit a report to the Supreme Court which had "evinced interest in his connections with an international arms dealer and his involvement in money-laundering cases". The court will pass its order on Friday and Khan will remain in ED custody till then.
Significantly, the law enforcement agency replaced its counsel Nidhi Punde with special public prosecutor Rajeev Awasthi who came from Delhi to convince the court that Khan could be tried under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). On Wednesday, principal sessions judge M L Tahaliyani had asked Punde to do some homework and present the case afresh.
