The mayor of Nogalez, Ariz. was arrested on charges of theft, bribery, fraud, and money laundering.
The F.B.I. took Octavio Garcia Von Borstel into custody Tuesday morning, accusing him of solicitation of local businesses for his contracting services.
A Nogales business confessed to the F.B.I. that they had paid Von Borstel for contracts and completely ignored formal bidding procedures.
Octavio Suarez Garcia, the mayor’s father and a Western Union Agent, was also arrested on charges of theft, fraud, and money laundering.
The two have been accused of cashing millions of dollars in Western Union money orders then putting the money in an individual account.
The state attorney general, Terry Goddard, released a statement that declared, “These charges are serious violations of the law. Because some charges involve the official actions of an elected official, they violate the public trust. Both the mayor and his father will be held accountable and prosecuted to the full extent of the law.”
