Minister for Home Affairs Brendan O’Connor today welcomed an Indonesian parliamentary delegation to Australia to discuss Indonesia’s draft law to combat money laundering.
“Australia welcomes Indonesia’s commitment to strengthening its anti-money laundering regime to fight organised crime, including people smuggling,” Mr O’Connor said.
“Today’s discussions demonstrate Australia’s strong relationship with Indonesia and the commitment of both countries to work together to combat transnational crime.
“Effective anti-money laundering systems play a pivotal role in detecting transnational and domestic crime and confiscating the illegally obtained assets of criminal activity.
“Both the Australian and Indonesian Governments are committed to effective laws to address money laundering and associated crimes,” Mr O’Connor said.
The delegation of Parliamentarians from special committees in Law, Human Rights, Security Banking and Finance, were keen to draw on Australia’s experience on the prevention of money laundering.
“The Rudd Government will continue to work with Indonesia on this important issue, and looks forward to close collaboration in fighting transnational organised crime.”
