A crowd of angry Egyptians awaited the arrival of former Interior Minister, Habib al-Aldi at a Cairo criminal court for the beginning of his trial on money laundering charges.

Aldi is blamed for the deaths of protesters in the uprising that toppled the old regime.

“No-one expected that the former Interior Minister would be behind bars or in a court room,” said opposition leader, Wael Al Abrashi.

“This makes us feel better and it will definitely calm people’s anger and make them trust the military council.”

Aldi’s role as police and prisons chief made him a reviled figure during protests.

He is the first minister of ousted President Hosni Mubarak to go on trial. The case was adjourned until April 2.

Meanwhile the public have been breaking into state security buildings in Alexandria and Cairo.

They say they are trying to prevent police destroying documents that could contain evidence of corruption by the Mubarak administration.
