In a turn of events straight out of a Hollywood movie like “Goodfellas”, accused money launder Michael Garone seems to be in the center of an undercover sting operation involving online gambling. Back in January Mr. Garone pleaded guilty to charges of money laundering and was cooperating with the Feds, but to what extent was not known. With court transcripts sealed until recently by the US court system, it seems that Mr. Garone was extensively cooperating and more arrests are imminent and it appears other people have been cooperating with law enforcement.
When court records indicate that the information someone supplied was substantial, that usually means that the defendant sang like a canary to help law enforcement go after other major players in businesses he was involved in. So with Mr. Garone pleading guilty and apparently cooperating with federal officers, documents had to be sealed for people’s safety. Assistant District Attorney Richard Kay told Judge Blake that Mr. Garone is cooperating with a very extensive undercover operation and to not seal the transcripts could put other people in danger. Kay also stated to the judge back in January that the ongoing operation would be compromised if anyone found out about Mr. Garone’s cooperation.
Now that the documents have gone public, there is a good chance the undercover operation is complete and that Mr. Garone has indeed helped federal law enforcement officials to other arrests.
