KNOXVILLE - Operators and employees of two Maryville pain clinics were arrested today after being indicted on conspiracy to distribute controlled substances.

The five people also were charged with conspiracy to commit money laundering and structuring cash transactions to avoid federal transaction reporting requirements, according to the U.S. Attorney's office.

All were taken into custody without incident. The indictments were returned Dec. 7 and unsealed today.

Arrested were Tamral Guzman, 40, who operates Maryville Pain Management, LLC on Lamar Alexander Parkway, and Brian Downey, 37, also charged with Guzman.

The operator of Breakthrough Pain Therapy Center, LLC on East Broadway, Sandra Kindcaid, 59, was taken into custody along with her husband Randy Kincaid, 55, and her daughter, Wendy Henry 41.

The Maryville Pain indictment seeks a judgment against Guzman of $1.6 million, while the government is seeking almost $1 million from the Kincaids and Henry.

The totals represent the amount of money alleged to be involved in the defendants' drug trafficking conspiracies, according to the U.S. Attorney's office.

Both indictments also seek the forfeiture of parcels of real estate (including both clinics), vehicles, and contents of the defendants' and the clinics' bank accounts.

If convicted, each defendant faces a term of up to 20 years in prison. They also face fines of up to $1 million and criminal forfeiture as alleged in the indictments.

The indictments are the result of a 13-month investigation.

More details as they develop online and in Wednesday's News Sentinel.
