The head of a former Milwaukee voucher school has been indicted by a federal grand jury on counts of mail fraud and money laundering.
Henry E. Tyler, 39, former executive administrator of L.E.A.D.E.R. Institute, at 2200 N. King Drive, has been indicted on five counts of mail fraud and one count of money laundering, according to the indictment, handed down in Milwaukee Tuesday afternoon.
L.E.A.D.E.R. was kicked out of the city's school choice program in early 2006 by the state, which cited financial insolvency. At the time, state officials said the school owed $497,822 for improperly cashed checks, improperly claimed summer school payments, past payroll payments and other debts.
The indictment says Tyler defrauded federal food programs out of $196,000 between Jan. 1, 2006 and May 5, 2006. It says Tyler was billing for 372 students "when in fact the total was much less."
