MOBILE, Ala. -- As expected, an Arizona man pleaded guilty this afternoon to a pair of federal conspiracy charges related to a pharmacy that distributed anabolic steroids.
Jesse S. Haggard, a naturopath who wrote prescriptions in 2005 that Applied Pharmacy Services filled, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute steroids and conspiracy to commit money laundering.
Defense attorney David York said he expects his client to face about a year in prison under terms of the plea agreement. Since Haggard has been jailed since returning to the United States from Costa Rica last year, York said, it is possible the sentence could translate to time served.
U.S. District Judge Ginny Granade set Haggard's sentencing for June.
Haggard, 32, was one of a dozen people named in an indictment in 2008. A jury convicted five of them last month.
Several doctors charged separately also have pleaded guilty. They include Dr. David A. Wilbirt, who recruited Haggard to take over his Scottsdale, Ariz., practice after suffering a stroke in February 2005.
