BUTTERWORTH: The former political secretary to Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Economic Planning Unit) Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Yakcop has claimed trial to a money-laundering charge involving RM2mil.
Hasbie Satar, 37, from Sarawak allegedly committed the offence in an apartment in Teluk Air Tawar at 3.30pm on Feb 11 last year.
He was charged under Section 4 (1) of the Anti-Money Laundering and Anti-Terrorism Financing Act 2001, which carries a fine up to RM5mil or a jail term up to five years or both.
Hasbie was unrepresented.
Judge Mohd Zairan Aman set bail at RM60,000 with two sureties and fixed March 14 for mention.
DPP Anselm Charles Fernandis had earlier asked for the bail to be set at RM100,000 but Hasbie pleaded for a lower sum, saying that he had to care for his wife and four children.
Hasbie was political secretary to Nor Mohamed when he was detained by Malaysian Anti-Cor–ruption Commission (MACC) officers.
He was appointed to the post in April 2008 and resigned three days after the MACC raided the apartment.
